Unmuted App

Tools: Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro

I created an app for female designers to discuss the difficulties they encounter in the workplace due to male patriarchy. Initially, it started as a series of posters that included QR codes that led to video interviews of female designers. However, I decided to expand the project's reach and create an app that would allow anyone to join the community and access the content from anywhere in the world.

This app offers full interviews, designer responses, mentorship circles, portfolio reviews, and messaging discussions. It helps female designers worldwide share their work experiences and challenges, all on their mobile devices.

Problem + Goals

Problem: All too often, it's uncommon to see creative agencies founded by women.

This problem stems from the lack of leadership roles available to women.

1. Empower young women creatives in the workforce by providing them with accessible and user-friendly role models through our platform

2. Highlight female graphic designer’s experiences to inspire the next generation of female leaders through community building.

3. Create a safe space for users to message each other for advice, and collaboration and to express themselves freely.

4. Spread positivity and encourage self-confidence towards users.

Research

Target Users: Female designers from all around the world who are looking for mentorship from experienced designers

To start my design process, I used the research and resources that I collected during my previous poster project. I also consulted with my peers who are designers, and drew upon my personal experience. My aim was to seek guidance from accomplished female designers in the creative field who could act as mentors for aspiring young designers. With that goal in mind, I scheduled interviews with six female designers both in-person and virtually.

Based on my resources and goals, I developed the project's content and finalized the app.

Video Interview: Gives users an option to watch the full interview rather reading their responses.

Interview Responses: Gives users an option to click to read their responses/answers to the interview questions.

Carousel/Slideshow: Showcasing the designer's work and the projects they have designed.

Message: Users can start a conversation, ask for design advice, receive free mentorship, and get their portfolio reviewed by messaging the designer.

After determining the content, I sketched the basic app structure and mapped different user flows.

Design Process

After developing the app structure, I sketched out wireframes and developed a low-fidelity prototype.

Learnings

For this project, I aimed to elevate my UX/UI design and prototyping skills by addressing the needs of female designers globally. Through this endeavor, I challenged myself to integrate relevant features into the app tailored to support female designers. Seeking to ensure a user-centric approach, I engaged with several female designers to test the prototype and gathered invaluable feedback for refinement.

To further enhance this project, I aspire to introduce a community engagement aspect. This entails empowering users to actively participate and contribute to the platform. One such feature could involve facilitating leadership roles where users can assist fellow designers. Additionally, I intend to incorporate social sharing functionalities, enabling users to effortlessly share interviews, Q&A sessions, and valuable content with their networks, fostering a sense of community and knowledge exchange.
